Tamil Nadu Medical Council
The Tamil Nadu Medical Council was established under the Madras Medical Registration act of 1914. The Madras Medical Council, established on 12th May 1914, was created by the then Governor General for Madras Presidency before the First World War.
Madras Medical Council had its own office at Madras Medical College, which was the Office of Surgeon General. The Madras Medical Council covered Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala, along with Pondicherry, when it was formed. This Council, which had been working at the Madras Medical College in Madras from 1915-1922, later opened its own offices at different places. This Council operated from its Vadapalani office for many years.
On 31.10.1915, the then Surgeon General Dr W.B.Bannerman became the Madras Medical Council’s first president.
On 29.11.2011, the Honourable Dr. Jayalalitha inaugurated a new office at Poonamalle High Road Arumbakkam in Chennai. Jayalalitha.
It has an attractive and welcoming atmosphere. The office is located in the same building as the Council Hall. All records are computerized, and data is stored safely. Once the RMP has completed their course, they can apply online, receive an appointment and visit our office to complete registration in just 3-4 hours. The Council, in order to keep up with technology is updating both its security and software.
The TN Medical Council is responsible for the registration of RMPs who are practicing in Tamil Nadu or Pondicherry, and those who have completed their studies on the Andaman & Nibar Islands. The Council ensures that RMPs are practicing scientifically and imparts them with medical ethics. It has issued a notification to implement clause 1.2.3 of Code of Professional Conduct, Ethics and Etiquette Regulations of the Medical Council of India and directed RMPs within its jurisdictions that they should update their knowledge through Continuing Medical Education. The Council also accredited around 250 organizations for CME to help RMPs. The Council also approved omnicuris for online courses to allow practitioners to study from home. It is in the process to launch its own online course.
The TNMC is known for holding democratic elections every 5 years. The TNMC is composed of seven elected RMP members and three nominees from the Govt. The Council is run by Tamilnadu. They elect the Vice President, members of the Executive Committee and their president .
Since the first registration of Dr Bannerman, 1,40,000 doctors were registered with the council until July 2019. RMPs, medical graduates and RMPs who have completed courses in Andhra Pradesh Karnataka or Kerala will now be governed by the respective state medical councils. After the creation of the respective states, they were removed from the TNMC.
Since 1956, the Tamil Nadu Medical Council has been the state-level unit of the Medical Council of India. This is a result of the Indian Medical Council Act of 1956. The MCI was founded in 1936. MCI’s work is done by the state medical councils, except for medical education. State councils’ main tasks are registration, licensing, disciplinary authority for misconduct and knowledge facilitation through CME.
MCI is directly involved in the medical education to guarantee uniformity and high quality.
- Tamil Nadu Medical Council registers medical practitioners with qualifications recognized by Medical Council of India in New Delhi and issues licenses to them.
- The Medical Registers are published every year by the Council. It also maintains the professionalism and discipline of all the Medical Practitioners registered with the Council.
- The Council issuing Certificates of Registration for Undergraduate, Graduate and Postgraduate Students, Certificates of No Objection, Certificates Of Good Standing and CME Certificates.
- In 2012, the Medical Council Awards was created on the model of BC Roy Awards given by MCI. First ‘Awards Function’ held at the Council’s office on July 1, 2013.
- Honorable Governors from Tamil Nadu presented the 2014, 2015 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 Awards.
