Lakhpati Didi Yojana
The Lakhpati Didi Yojana is an innovative initiative introduced by the Government of India, aimed at empowering rural women by enabling them to become successful entrepreneurs. This program is part of the larger Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM) and seeks to uplift women from Self Help Groups (SHGs) by equipping them with essential skills, financial assistance, and market access to achieve economic independence and self-sufficiency.
The primary objective of the Lakhpati Didi Yojana is to assist at least 3 crore rural women in becoming “Lakhpati Didis”, meaning women who generate a sustainable income of ₹1 lakh or more annually through micro-enterprises and livelihood activities. This goal, set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is to be realized by the year 2026. The scheme not only emphasizes income generation but also fosters the development of leadership abilities, digital literacy, and financial knowledge among rural women.
Through this initiative, women linked to SHGs receive training in various trades and small-scale businesses, including tailoring, food processing, dairy farming, goat rearing, handicrafts, organic farming, mushroom cultivation, beekeeping, beauty parlours, and digital services such as Common Service Centers (CSCs). The government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Rural Development, partners with multiple public and private sector entities to offer these women skill development programs, access to credit, mentorship, and guidance.
Another significant element of the Lakhpati Didi Yojana is the community support framework. Successful female entrepreneurs are motivated to serve as community resource persons (CRPs) and mentor other women in their localities. This fosters a ripple effect of empowerment, as the success of one woman inspires and guides many others within her community. These CRPs receive honorariums and are vital in overseeing the scheme’s progress at the grassroots level.
The initiative also highlights the importance of technology and innovation in rural entrepreneurship. Women are educated on utilizing digital tools for managing financial records, accessing government programs, applying for loans, and marketing their products online. This digital empowerment aids in closing the rural-urban gap and creates new avenues for income generation. To maintain transparency and accountability, the advancement of the Lakhpati Didi Yojana is monitored through a centralized management information system (MIS). Ongoing evaluations, success narratives, and feedback are utilized to enhance the scheme and effectively expand it across various states and regions.

The effects of the scheme are already evident in several states such as Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha, where thousands of SHG women have evolved into successful micro-entrepreneurs. These women, who were once limited to traditional domestic roles, are now actively contributing to their families’ income and the economies of their villages.
