Tamil Nadu Electricity Board
The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), now referred to as the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO), is a statutory organization tasked with the generation, distribution, and transmission of electricity throughout Tamil Nadu, India. Founded in 1957, TNEB has transformed into one of the most prominent utility companies in the nation over the years. It operates under the auspices of the Government of Tamil Nadu and is essential in delivering a dependable power supply to millions of households and businesses within the state. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of TNEB, detailing its functions, services, and the organization’s efforts to maintain a stable and continuous power supply for the residents of Tamil Nadu.
Initially established as a governmental entity to oversee electricity supply, generation, and distribution in Tamil Nadu, TNEB has expanded its operations to accommodate the increasing energy demands of the region. The rapid pace of industrialization and urban growth necessitated a strong electricity distribution framework. In response, TNEB initiated various infrastructure projects, including the construction of power plants, installation of transmission lines, and establishment of substations, ensuring electricity access even in the most isolated areas of the state.
In 2010, the Government of Tamil Nadu opted to restructure TNEB into distinct entities to enhance operational efficiency. This reorganization resulted in the creation of TANGEDCO for electricity distribution, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Electricity Corporation (TANGENCO) for power generation, and the Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (TANTRANSCO) for transmission. Currently, TANGEDCO primarily concentrates on electricity distribution, while TANGENCO handles power generation and TANTRANSCO manages transmission.

TNEB’s predecessor, now known as TANGENCO, is tasked with electricity generation through various sources, including thermal, hydro, and renewable energy. The power generation facilities operated by TANGEDCO encompass significant coal-fired thermal power plants, hydroelectric stations, and wind energy farms, all of which play a vital role in supplying power to the state. Among the notable power stations under TANGEDCO’s management are the Mettur Thermal Power Station and the North Chennai Thermal Power Station.
TANTRANSCO, the transmission division of TNEB, is responsible for transporting electricity from generation facilities to substations and subsequently to various distribution points throughout the state. TANTRANSCO ensures the efficient and secure transmission of electricity over extensive distances by employing high-voltage transmission lines.
TANGEDCO is in charge of distributing electricity to consumers across Tamil Nadu. Its responsibilities include guaranteeing a consistent power supply for consumers and managing customer accounts, billing, metering, and service maintenance. The distribution network comprises transformers, substations, and low-voltage lines that deliver electricity to residential, commercial, and industrial users. To maintain a stable and reliable power supply, regular upkeep of power plants, substations, transmission lines, and transformers is crucial. TNEB conducts routine maintenance and infrastructure upgrades to accommodate growing demand and minimize outages.
A key function of TNEB is metering and billing. TANGEDCO supplies meters to all consumers, whether residential, commercial, or industrial, to track electricity usage. The board is responsible for meter readings, bill issuance, and payment collection from customers. In recent years, TNEB has introduced online billing systems, enabling customers to view and pay their bills through the internet. TNEB offers a range of customer services, including the establishment of new connections, reconnections, disconnections, and mechanisms for addressing grievances. Customers can apply for new electricity connections, resolve billing concerns, report power outages, and request repairs via the TNEB portal or by visiting customer service centers.
Tamil Nadu has experienced power shortages during peak demand periods, attributed to rising consumption and constrained power generation capacity. TNEB is actively investing in new power plants and renewable energy sources to address this growing demand. Transmission and distribution losses are a widespread challenge faced by power utilities worldwide. TNEB has been focused on enhancing the efficiency of its transmission and distribution systems to mitigate these losses.

The demand for electricity continues to rise, necessitating upgrades to TNEB’s infrastructure, including power plants, substations, and transmission lines. The integration of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, also demands significant infrastructure investment. Despite notable advancements in electrifying rural areas, certain regions in Tamil Nadu still experience unstable or unavailable electricity supply. TNEB remains committed to expanding electricity access in these underserved areas.
TNEB (TANGEDCO) is crucial to the economic and social development of Tamil Nadu by ensuring reliable electricity supply to homes, industries, and businesses. Over the years, the board has broadened its services, enhanced operational efficiency, and tackled the challenges associated with power generation, transmission, and distribution. With the launch of online services and a growing emphasis on renewable energy, TNEB is progressing towards establishing a sustainable and future-ready electricity network for Tamil Nadu.
