The Central Survey Office and Its Functions
As the name suggests, the Central Survey Office is a central office that monitors and coordinates the work of the district offices in each District in Tamil Nadu. It also includes the four regional offices in Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai.

Drawing BRANCH
Drawing Branch’s main function is to produce originals of maps that are accurately drawn. Staff strength is headed by a Joint Director (Technical), assisted by one Deputy Director, one Assistant Director, and three Manager Technical. The different sections have a Chief Draftsman, and all the necessary staff.
The main drawing task at the Central Survey Office is the re-preparation village maps to update Registry Scheme villages. Maps on the foot Pound system (links), are reduced by photography to get Prints on 1:5000 scale in metric measurements. The prints are then transferred to transparent drawing files for final printing by the Vandyke Technique. Conventional methods are used to prepare the originals for Town, Taluk and District maps, as well as other types of maps.
Since 1983, the central Surveys Office has been using modern technologies to prepare original maps with fair drawings. Some of these techniques include:

Computerized Cartographic Centre of the Central Survey Office
A Computerised Cartographic Centre has been established as a first step in modernizing the Department of Survey. It will be responsible for digitising the entire collection of maps created by the Central Survey Office.
The Survey House was opened on the 18th of July 2001 in the PWD Complex, Chepauk, for the Tamil Nadu Survey and Land Records Department. The Computerised Cartographic Centre was given a separate wing. To meet the needs of Government, the Public and user departments the centre has been expanded to include the following infrastructure.
These maps are intended to be sold to the public and distributed to various government departments.

The department will scan and preserve old Village, Town and Main Circuit records, which are the basis for the Re-Survey that is ordered as part of modernization.
MAP SALES SECTION
District maps, Taluk maps and Village maps are sold to government departments and the public to generate revenue for the state. The Public is informed of the information that they are entitled to upon payment of the relevant fee.
