Free Spiritual Pilgrimage To Perumal Temple
The Government of Tamil Nadu has launched a complimentary spiritual pilgrimage program for senior citizens, emphasizing visits to renowned Perumal (Lord Vishnu) temples throughout the state. This initiative, initiated by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department in partnership with the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department, seeks to offer a sacred travel experience for elderly devotees who may lack the financial means or physical capability to embark on such journeys independently. The program is mainly organized during the Tamil month of Purattasi, which is regarded as particularly auspicious for Vishnu devotees, especially on Saturdays.
This initiative is available to Hindu senior citizens aged between 60 and 70. To qualify, applicants must be physically capable of traveling and should not be afflicted by any chronic health conditions. Preference is given to individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Participants are chosen from various regions of the state, including Chennai, Kanchipuram, Trichy, Madurai, Thanjavur, Villupuram, and Tirunelveli. Applicants must provide identity verification, proof of age, proof of residence, and a medical fitness certificate to their respective zonal HR&CE offices before the specified deadline.
Once selected, pilgrims receive complimentary round-trip transportation via government-arranged buses. They are taken to visit several prominent Perumal temples in their locality. For example, in the Chennai zone, the itinerary includes the historic Parthasarathy Temple in Triplicane, the Ashtalakshmi Temple in Besant Nagar, and the Sthalasayana Perumal Temple in Mahabalipuram. In the Trichy zone, the pilgrimage features the renowned Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, the Pundarikaksha Perumal Temple in Thiruvellarai, and the Appakudathan Temple in Koviladi. Similar arrangements are made in other zones, encompassing significant temples in each area.
During the pilgrimage, the government guarantees the provision of all essential facilities. Devotees are offered vegetarian meals, drinking water, and assistance throughout their journey. Volunteers and officials accompany the groups to provide support for boarding, coordination of darshan, and any medical needs that may arise. The entire journey is meticulously planned and completed within a single day, enabling the elderly to participate without experiencing undue stress or fatigue.
